Getting started

Three steps, about ten seconds. There is nothing to download and nothing to sign up for.

1

Pick your console

Choose the Game Boy / Color page for .gb and .gbc files, or the Game Boy Advance page for .gba files.

2

Load your game

Click Load ROM and pick the file, or just drag and drop it anywhere on the page. It opens instantly — nothing is uploaded anywhere.

3

Play

Use the keyboard, plug in a controller, or tap the on-screen buttons on a phone. Your progress saves automatically as you go.

What you get

Everything runs locally in your browser, so it works offline once the page has loaded and stays fast even on modest hardware.

Save states

Freeze the game exactly where it is and jump back later. Several numbered slots per game, plus a rolling auto-save every couple of seconds so a crash or a stray reload never costs you a boss fight.

Cheat codes

Enter your own Game Genie or GameShark codes, or pick from a large built-in database of known codes. Search and filter the list, toggle codes on and off while you play, and an on-screen badge always shows which ones are active.

Controller support

Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, 8BitDo and the Steam Deck's built-in controls are detected automatically. Any button can be rebound, and your mapping is remembered per controller.

Your game library

Games you load are kept on your device, so coming back doesn't mean finding the file again. Games are matched by their contents, so renaming a file won't create a duplicate.

Console artwork

Your game runs inside a drawn handheld that matches the console you picked. When a game loads, the view pulls in so the screen fills the space — like lifting the real thing closer to your face. Switch it off any time for a plain full-size screen.

Fast-forward & frame advance

Hold Space (or the right trigger) to skip grinding and long text, with a clear on-screen indicator so you always know it's on. Step a single frame at a time while paused.

Phone and tablet friendly

Touch controls appear automatically on a touchscreen, with shoulder buttons on the Game Boy Advance page. No app to install — just open the page.

Real save files

Export the native .sav your cartridge would have written — the same format real hardware, mGBA, RetroArch and flash carts use. Import one back just as easily.

How the controls work

Keyboard by default, gamepad if you have one, touch on a phone. All three work at the same time — pick up a controller mid-game and it just takes over.

Browsers keep audio muted until you interact with the page, so click once or press a key if a game starts silent. A controller button press doesn't count — that's a browser rule, not a bug.

Where your saves live

This is the one thing worth reading before you get deep into a game.

Your progress is stored in this browser, on this device

Your ROM file is opened read-only and is never modified. When a game saves, that data goes into your browser's private storage for this site — which means it lives in exactly one place. It does not follow you to another browser or another computer, and clearing your browsing data deletes it. Private or incognito windows throw everything away when you close them.

Use Export .sav to download a real save file you can keep, back up, or carry to another device. That downloaded copy is the one that's genuinely yours.

Both emulator pages explain this the first time you load a game, and a Saves ⓘ button in the header brings the full explanation back whenever you want it.

Common questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. EmuKing runs entirely inside your browser. There is no download, no plugin, no account, and nothing to configure.

Do you provide games?

No. EmuKing does not host, provide, or link to any game ROMs or BIOS files, and it never will. You supply your own file — typically a backup you made from a cartridge you own.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

Never. Your game file is read directly by your browser and stays on your machine. The emulator itself runs on your device, not ours, which is also why it keeps working if your connection drops.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Touch controls appear automatically on touchscreens. A Bluetooth controller works too if your phone supports one.

Can I move my progress to another device?

Yes — use Export .sav on the first device, then Import .sav on the second. Save data does not sync by itself, because nothing is stored on a server.

Will my old save file from another emulator work?

Usually, yes. EmuKing reads and writes the standard .sav format used by real hardware and by emulators like mGBA and RetroArch. Import it and carry on where you left off.

Something isn't working. What do I do?

Use the Report a bug button at the top of any page. Tell me what game you were playing and what happened, and I'll fix it. Your game file is never included in a report.
